The stranger who told me my tent stakes were trash saved my weekend in Shenandoah

Last May I was setting up at a campsite near Big Meadows and this older guy walks over, points at my cheap twist stakes, and says "those will pull right out in the wet ground." I ignored him, figured he was just bored. Sure enough, a storm rolled in at 3am and my tent nearly turned into a kite. Had to pack up in the rain with a headlamp and sleep in my car. He was using those big orange plastic ones, and now I swear by them. Anyone else had a random stranger's gear tip that actually beat the forums?
