The big debate: sleeping bag ratings are all lies or just misunderstood?
I keep seeing people trash talk sleeping bag temperature ratings online, saying they're useless because they froze at 20 degrees in a bag rated for 20 degrees. But here's the thing: that rating assumes you're on a proper insulated pad, wearing base layers, and not starving. Last month I tested this myself on a trip up in the White Mountains. I brought my old 15 degree bag and slept on a thin foam pad one night, then on a thick inflatable pad the next. First night I was shivering at 25 degrees. Second night I was sweating at 18 degrees. The pad made that much difference. Also being fed vs hungry changes things too, I ate a big dinner before the warm night and barely ate before the cold one. So is it the bag makers lying or us not reading the fine print? Who else has had a similar experience where one thing changed the whole game for you?
