The $89 stove that failed me on night one near Lake Tahoe, but my buddy's $40 one worked fine
I picked up a compact butane stove for a solo trip up by Lake Tahoe last month. Paid $89 because the reviews said it was windproof and reliable. First night, 40 degree temps and a light breeze, it sputtered out every five minutes. My buddy had a $40 knockoff from a gas station that ran smooth the whole weekend. So is paying double for a name brand actually worth it, or are these cheap stoves just as good in real conditions? Curious if anyone else got burned by a pricey gear pick while the budget option pulled through.
My buddy Dave bought a $120 Jetboil for a trip to Joshua Tree two years ago and it died on him the second morning, the igniter just clicked and nothing happened. He ended up boiling water on my other friend's $25 pocket rocket knockoff the rest of the trip. Turns out the cheap one had a simpler design with less stuff to break, no fancy piezo starter or built in regulator to fail. Dave was so mad he mailed the Jetboil back and they sent him a new one, which he then sold and bought two of the cheap ones instead. So yeah, price and brand name don't always mean better when you're actually out there in the cold and wind. Sometimes you're just paying for the logo and the marketing.
