My buddy swore by the 'double sleeping bag' trick and I finally tried it

My friend Dave from work kept telling me to just zip two sleeping bags together instead of buying a fancy winter bag. I finally did it last month on a trip to the Adirondacks near Lake Placid where it dropped to 18 degrees. Honestly, I stayed way warmer than I expected and saved about $150 compared to a 0 degree bag. Has anyone else tried this method for cold weather camping?

Oh man, the "double sleeping bag" thing. I get why people try it but I gotta gently push back on that "saving about $150" part. Actually, you're basically using two bags that you already own or bought, so if you bought two cheap 20 degree bags they might cost around $100 total and you'd be sleeping in a system that's maybe good to 20 degrees if you're lucky. The real math with layering bags is tricky because putting one bag inside another doesn't just add the warmth ratings. It usually gives you maybe 10-15 degrees of extra warmth max, not 20 degrees. So if you had two 20 degree bags, you're probably still only good down to around 5 to 10 degrees, not zero like a proper winter bag. Plus the weight and bulk of carrying two bags is way more than one good winter bag. I mean, it works in a pinch and I've done it myself, but it's not really the same thing as a real 0 degree bag. Just saying.

Classic shortcut that seems smart till you see the extra weight and bulk.
