Hit 25 nights in my hammock this year without a single tarp failure

I started tracking my hammock camping trips back in March and just realized I've slept outside 25 times in 2023. Every single night the tarp setup held up in rain or wind without any rips or leaks. How many nights do you usually get in before you notice gear starting to wear down?

A buddy of mine hit 40 nights one year before his tarp finally got a small tear along a seam in a windstorm. He patched it with some tenacious tape and it held fine for another 15 nights before he replaced it. Have you ever had to patch a tarp mid trip or do you just swap them out?

It's funny how that translates to pretty much everything we own these days. My dad still has his original cast iron skillet from 1983 with a handle he rewelded twice, but people I know will buy a whole new $200 tent over a three inch zipper issue. We've lost the habit of fixing stuff because somewhere along the line we decided it's easier to just start over. That tarp story is proof that a little tape and ten minutes can save you from throwing out something that's perfectly good for years longer. Kinda makes you wonder what else we're ditching too soon just because we forgot how to patch it.
