Debate: Is a heavy duty canvas tent worth the weight vs a cheap nylon one?

I was talking to a guy at REI last weekend who swore his $600 canvas tent lasted through 50 mph winds in Colorado, while another dude said his $90 nylon Coleman did the same job for a quarter of the price. Has anyone here actually had a canvas tent fail on them or is the hype just marketing?

Did you ask the Coleman guy if he actually camped or just set it up in his backyard?

Man I had the exact same thought when I saw that video. He was way too clean and organized for someone who just spent a weekend in the mud and rain. His tent looked like it came straight out of the box with no dust or dirt on anything. Plus he had that staged Instagram vibe like he was trying to sell something more than actually show real camping.
