Brought a $12 analog compass on 4 trips, then a park ranger in Sedona made me switch to digital
For a long time I figured a cheap baseplate compass was all I needed, and I would just eyeball the bearing and hope for the best. Two months back near Sedona I ended up way off the trail and the ranger pulled out his phone, loaded a GPS app, and had my spot in about 20 seconds. I felt pretty dumb standing there holding my little needle. Now I carry both, the compass as backup and the phone for real navigation. Has anyone else found a trail where the app completely stopped working on them?
