After 5 nights of rain near Lake Tahoe, I finally got why people swear by tarp shelters over tents

Five nights straight of rain in Tahoe is no joke, that wet cold gets into everything. What got me was how tarp setups let you adjust the pitch on the fly without taking the whole thing down, you can just tweak one corner when the wind shifts. Plus you can set it up under trees or between rocks where no tent would fit right. I think the real secret is how much less condensation you deal with compared to a tent when the humidity is maxed out like that.

That three corner thing actually works better with a flat tarp than a shaped one, even though most people think you need a shaped tarp for good wind protection in the rain. Took me a while to figure that out too, honestly.

My buddy Mike tried that in the Sierras and his tarp held up way better than my new tent did.
