That $15 spanner wrench from Amazon was a total gamble

Bought it to fix a stuck retaining ring on a vintage Minolta lens and it snapped on the second use. Had to borrow a proper one from a buddy that cost like $40 and it worked perfect. Anyone else had bad luck with those cheap repair kits?

Yeah that sounds about right. Those cheap Amazon kits are pure junk for anything that needs actual torque. You pay a little more for the proper tool and it just works. Wasted money on those budget sets myself a few times before I learned my lesson. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.

Read an article just last week that said most of those cheap ratchets are made with lower grade steel that can snap under heavy load. A guy I know busted his knuckles pretty bad when one gave out on him. Said he was tightening lug nuts and the handle just cracked clean in half. Not worth saving twenty bucks if it means a trip to urgent care.
