Stuck on a shutter curtain timing issue for 3 days straight

I spent nearly 6 hours adjusting the curtain tension on a Nikon FM2 before realizing the problem was just a bent fork in the take-up spool - what's the longest you've chased a dumb fix that turned out to be something simple?

my buddy spent like 4 hours tearing down a canon ae-1 because the mirror was sticking. he cleaned everything, replaced the foam, even adjusted the shutter magnets. turned out the battery contacts were just a little corroded. a quick rub with a pencil eraser fixed the whole thing. he was so mad he didn't talk to me for a week.

That's brutal. I once spent an afternoon chasing a light leak on a Pentax K1000 before realizing I put the film in backwards.

Wait, do people actually put film in backwards often enough that it's a known thing? I gotta say, that's a new level of stubborn for me - at least you figured it out eventually.
