Picked a helicoil over a full thread replacement on a beat-up Mamiya 645
Had a Mamiya 645 body come in last week with a stripped tripod mount thread. I was going back and forth between using a helicoil kit or just drilling it out and putting in a whole new threaded insert. Ended up going with the helicoil because it felt less invasive and I've been meaning to try one anyway. Worked like a charm after I got the tension right on the tap. Has anyone else had luck with helicoils on magnesium alloy bodies like this one?

Six helicoils later and I'm still not sure it's level.

And that right there is basically every DIY project in a nutshell, isn't it? You start off thinking oh it'll be an hour tops, and then you're three trips to the hardware store and your whole Saturday later, still second guessing yourself. It's like life has this hidden rule that nothing can ever be just straightforward, there's always one more thing that needs fixing or adjusting. And the worst part is you never know if you're being too picky or if it's actually going to cause problems down the road. I swear we've all been trained to accept that anything worth doing is going to make you question your sanity at least twice.
