I keep seeing people strip the wrong screw on a Canon AE-1's top plate and it's a huge headache to fix.

After fixing three of them this month where someone used the wrong driver and mangled the JIS crosshead, I'm convinced a basic $15 JIS screwdriver set would save so many DIYers from a costly mistake.

Ugh, that's the worst. It's not just the AE-1 either, so many old cameras use JIS screws and people treat them like Phillips. The stripped heads are almost impossible to grab without drilling, which can ruin the whole plate. Do you find some models are worse than others?

Used to think it was just people being careless with tools. Then I tried fixing a Minolta XG-M and realized every single screw was JIS. The difference is tiny but it matters so much. Now I check every old Japanese camera before even touching it. That one project changed my whole approach.

Yeah, the "almost impossible to grab without drilling" part is what gives me nightmares. I learned the hard way on an old Nikon, stripping a screw so bad I had to use a dremel. @bennett.noah is right, it's everywhere. My own dumb mistake is why I finally bought a JIS set. Now I just feel silly looking at my old stripped screws in a jar.
