Walked into a spot on Abbot Kinney last Tuesday and the whole menu was handwritten on a mirror
So I was killing time on Abbot Kinney in Venice last Tuesday waiting on a pastry supplier meeting that got pushed back, and I ducked into this little cafe I had never tried. The first thing I noticed was the menu, no printed boards, no QR code, just a big framed mirror by the register with the whole menu written in chalk. Drinks on the left side, food on the right, prices squeezed in small at the end of each line. It looked great, super warm and personal, and I stood there thinking this is such a cheap way to change your look. Then I watched three people in a row squint at it and ask the barista what the matcha price was because the chalk had smudged where someone's sleeve brushed it. The barista had to read the mirror out loud like a teacher, and one lady just gave up and ordered a drip coffee. I run a 22 seat shop in Culver City and I have been wanting to ditch my printed menus for something more handmade, but now I am not so sure. Has anyone here gone the chalkboard or mirror route and actually kept it readable, or does it always turn into this?
