The customer who tried to pay for a latte with a houseplant

This happened at my spot in Echo Park about two months ago. A regular, super nice guy, came in and ordered his usual. When I told him the total, he just stared at his wallet, then looked out the window at his car. He came back inside holding this little succulent in a tiny clay pot and said, completely serious, 'I forgot my card. Will you take this? I grew it from a clipping, it's worth at least five bucks.' I had to explain, as gently as I could, that my point-of-sale system doesn't have a 'philodendron' button. Has anyone else had a truly bizarre attempted trade?

Remember my friend who works at that record store? Someone tried to buy a vinyl with a half-eaten bag of fancy dog treats. Like, what even is the exchange rate on that?

The exchange rate on that is probably better than my last paycheck, umamartin.

My cousin works at a library and someone tried to pay a late fee with a shoebox full of old foreign coins. The real problem was figuring out which ones were even still real money.
