Finally found the cheap fix for my espresso machine's steam wand issue after 3 months of frustration
I spent $80 on repair quotes then realized the rubber gasket on my old Rancilio Silvia just needed a $2 O-ring from Ace Hardware in Echo Park so has anyone else gotten away with a hardware store part instead of the expensive brand name?

Three months over a rubber gasket? I mean, did you try just looking at it before dropping 80 bucks on quotes? Plenty of machines have parts that are just repurposed hardware store stuff but that seems like a lot of wasted time for a two dollar fix. Is the world really ending if you use a slightly different size O-ring from the plumbing aisle? Maybe just keep a few extras in the drawer instead of treating it like some major life crisis.

Dude, it's just a gasket, how bad could a hardware store o-ring be?

And honestly? sometimes it's just not worth the hassle of trying to make a random hardware store o-ring work when you can't be 100% sure it'll hold up to heat or pressure or whatever the machine throws at it... I've seen people try to jury-rig stuff and end up making a much bigger mess that costs way more to fix later. Plus not everyone has the time or patience to dig through a plumbing aisle guessing at sizes and materials, you know? Some folks would rather just pay for the peace of mind that the right part is going to seal right the first time instead of crossing their fingers and hoping a dollar store gasket doesn't blow out on a Saturday.
