That master tech from Charlotte gave me bad advice on a hard drop

Ran into a guy named Rick who's been doing this 20 years, he swore by using a 3/8 drill bit for brick anchors on every job. Tried it on a townhouse in Charlotte last Tuesday, 2 of the 4 anchors stripped right out. Had to redo the whole mount, cost me an extra 45 minutes and a drive back to the shop for proper 1/2 bits. Anyone else get told some old school trick that just doesnt hold up anymore?

That bit about "20 years" got me. I used to hear that and think experience means everything. But honestly I was the same way, I had this old method for setting posts in concrete that I swore by for years. Then I finally tried the newer way with a level and bracing system and it cut my dry time problems in half. Rick probably knows his stuff for certain jobs, but saying one bit works for every brick anchor is just lazy. The walls, the brick density, the fixture weight all change what you need. Sounds like you learned the hard way that old school doesn't always mean best school. I used to be a believer in that stuff too, but after enough callbacks you stop trusting the legend and start trusting the test.
