Remember when we used to run cat5 without even thinking about grounding?
I was doing a service call in an old building from the 90s today and saw their original cable runs just stapled along the baseboards. Ngl, we've come a long way since then. Anyone else miss when jobs didn't take twice as long because of all the extra codes now?

Wait, was your friend working in a school gymnasium by any chance? My buddy Jake got flagged for the same thing back in 2018. He was running some low voltage for a new scoreboard and had the cable zip tied to the grid every 2 feet or so because that's what made sense. The inspector walks in, doesn't say a word, just pulls out his tape measure and starts counting. Jake still gets mad about it when we grab a beer. He had to redo the whole run with those stupid j-hooks and it added three hours to what should have been a one hour job. Meanwhile there's a pipe leaking condensation right above the main breaker panel in the same building and nobody cares.

Depends on the job though... I've seen plenum rated cable stapled right next to a sprinkler pipe and nobody cared for years. Codes exist for a reason, sure, but half the time it feels like they're written by guys who've never actually pulled cable in a drop ceiling. Had a building inspector flag me once for not using j-hooks every 4 feet on a straight run that was already secured tight. Total time sink for zero benefit.
