Old timer's trick about dead zones actually worked on me

Two weeks ago I was fighting a signal drop in a basement apartment on Maple Street, and a retired cable guy named Frank who was hanging around the building told me to leave the ground block alone and instead trace the drop line for a crushed spot. I thought he was full of it since I was sure the issue was the splitter, but after 20 minutes of crawling I found a pinch under a furnace vent that I would've never checked. Has anyone else had a customer or passerby give you a tip that turned out better than your own plan?

My buddy runs a seafood shop and had a delivery driver tell him to stop messing with the thermostat on his walk-in cooler and check the rubber door seal instead. He spent a whole morning convinced the compressor was dying, even had a repair guy on the way. The driver just pointed at a little gap in the corner where the seal had folded over. He pushed it back flat, and the temp dropped right off the next hour, never had a problem since.
