Old timer in San Antonio told me to never trust a cable toner that uses 9-volt batteries

He said the cheap ones drift frequency after a week, and sure enough I spent 3 hours chasing a phantom tone on a new build out near Loop 410. Anybody else had a toner lie to them like that?

Nah I gotta disagree on this one, I've been using a cheap 9-volt toner for years and it's never given me a false reading. The problem is usually bad terminations or loose connections on the ends, not the tool itself. Most of the time when I think the toner is lying it turns out I just had a bad patch cable in the mix.

Man that's rough. Flew 3 hours on a bad signal myself once.
