My lead in Tampa swore by using a 3/8 inch spade bit for every wall plate, but it caused a real mess last week.

Heard a guy on a job site talk about that exact thing. He said a 3/8 bit is way too big for most low voltage wires and it just chews up the wood. Saw him use a 7/16 bit for a single gang box and it left a huge hole, the plate barely covered it. A smaller bit, like a 1/2 inch for grouped cables, gives you a much cleaner finish. That big bit just makes a mess and weakens the stud.

Ugh, that sounds so frustrating... I hate when people use the wrong size bit and mess up the wood like that. Makes so much extra work to fix.

Honestly, smaller bits leave a tighter hole that's way stronger.
