My boss swore by electrical tape for everything. He was dead wrong.

Jerry at the shop always said use electrical tape on every connection. I followed his advice for a solid year. Then last month I had a service call in Tulsa where all my tape had melted off inside an attic. Switched to heat shrink after that, never looking back. Anyone else have to unlearn some old timer's bad habit?

Tape has its place, just not in attics or anywhere heat is a factor.

. . . and I was the fool who taped up a junction box in my own garage two summers ago. Thought I was being all professional like Jerry. Came back a few months later to find the tape had dried out and peeled off like a bad sunburn. Now I got heat shrink on everything that moves and some stuff that doesn't. My go bag still has a roll of tape but it's only for bundling wires together, not for actual insulation. Took me way too long to learn that lesson, but at least my attic won't be a melted mess anymore. What kind of stuff did Jerry swear by that you had to re-learn the hard way?
