Just realized why my drill bit kept walking on that old brick house in Springfield

I was trying to mount a drop box on this hundred-year-old brick last Tuesday, and my bit kept skating off the surface no matter how much I tried to hold it steady. After the third ruined bit, I remembered a guy at the supply house once told me to use a center punch on masonry, but I never listened. I grabbed my punch, made a tiny dent, and the bit went right in on the first try. Anyone have a better trick for old, hard brick?

Ever try a masonry nail first?

That sounds like a lot of work for a dent lol. Couldn't you just use a slower drill speed?

Notice how everyone skips the simplest fix and jumps straight to the hardest option. That's just how people are with projects honestly, they'd rather buy a special tool or watch a 10 minute tutorial than stop and think for two seconds. Slower speed with steady pressure works way better than half the tricks people swear by.
