Just realized new apartment complexes are ditching cable closets entirely

I helped a friend run some lines in a brand new building last weekend (he's an installer, I just tag along sometimes). Every unit had a single panel in the living room with just ethernet and power, no dedicated space for cable gear anymore. It seems like the design assumes all equipment will be out in the open now, which looks cleaner I guess. But it makes me think about how installers have to work with less hidden infrastructure. Changes the whole approach to setting up a place, right?

Right? My building's the same, so where's the router supposed to go?

Wondering how this affects renters who actually need to run proper wiring later. Without those closets or conduit paths, you can't hide anything without drilling into drywall everywhere. Makes any semi permanent setup impossible unless you want cables snaking across rooms. Basically forces everything to be wireless or ugly, which feels like a temporary solution for people living there full time. Landlords won't be happy when folks start punching holes to try and hide gear properly.

Consider what you're saying, @jadew63, but I have a different take. Wireless systems are really good now for most home needs. I've seen friends set up full home offices without any permanent changes. If wires are needed, you can use cable covers that stick on walls without damage. Many renters do this and keep things tidy. Landlords often allow small changes if they're easy to undo, so drilling holes isn't the only option.
