My neighbor saw my shop and asked if I ever make anything just for fun

I was showing him a big built-in I'm finishing for a client, and he looked around and said, 'Do you ever just build a box for the joy of it anymore?' I've been so focused on client work and deadlines that I realized I haven't made something just for me in over a year. Do you guys still make personal projects, or does the job kill the hobby?

Funny you should ask, my personal projects are mostly fixing my own terrible DIY mistakes from years ago. Last thing I made for pure fun was a ridiculously overbuilt birdhouse that probably stressed out the local sparrows. The client work definitely makes you see your free time differently.

What's the worst DIY mistake you're still living with?

So did the sparrows at least get a security deposit back? Sounds like you built them a panic room. I get it though, after a day of client specs everything at home either gets ignored or turned into a fortress. My weekend projects look like they're designed to survive a hurricane.
