My kid asked why I sand a board nobody will ever see, and I could not give him a straight answer
He was sitting on a stool in my garage on a Saturday watching me finish a set of cabinet doors for a kitchen job over in Beaverton. I was on my third pass with 220 grit on the inside of a face frame stile, and he asked who would ever look in there. I started to say "nobody" and then just stood there holding the sander. My old lead guy used to say the hidden faces are where a cabinet guy shows what he is, and I repeated that for years without really thinking about it. But I could not explain to a 9 year old why I spend an extra 40 minutes on surfaces no hand will touch. Now I am second guessing whether I am doing it for the work or just because that is how I was taught. Do you all finish the insides the same way you do the doors, or am I wasting my time here?
