Had a chat with a framer that made me rethink my domino joinery
So I was on a job site in Portland last Tuesday and this old-school framer, Jim, watched me setting up my Domino for some cabinet face frames. He just said, "You trust that little machine more than your own eyes don't you?" and walked off. It got me thinking about how I've been leaning on it for everything instead of just using it for alignment. Has anyone else ever had their workflow challenged by a random comment from someone in a different trade?

Man, that hits close to home. Jim sounds like a salty old dog but he might have a point. I had a similar moment a few years back when a carpenter told me I was using my router like a crutch instead of a tool. It made me wonder - does that machine actually save you time or is it just covering up bad layout habits? Like, how often do you actually check your marks before plunging in? Because if you're just trusting the Domino to be perfect every time, you're gonna get bit eventually. I still use mine but I make sure I'm double checking the tape and square before I commit.

My dad said the same thing about my biscuit joiner back in 2005, and he was right too.
