Shoutout to the cheap plastic cutting board I nearly tossed

I bought a flimsy $6 cutting board from a dollar store in Austin about 4 years ago just to have something for camping... finally replaced it last week and the new expensive one warped after 2 washes. The old one never bent or cracked no matter how much abuse it took. Anybody else have a random cheap item that just refuses to die on you?

...and my buddy Mark had this little red plastic spatula he got from a gas station for like 2 bucks. Thing looked cheap as hell, handle was already a little crooked out of the package. He kept it for flipping burgers and eggs, it survived four moves, two roommates who didn't wash dishes, and one time he accidentally left it in a hot pan for like 20 minutes. Last year he finally replaced it with a nice silicone one from Target, and that broke on the second use. The red one is still in his camping gear, still going strong.

I read somewhere that cheap plastic stuff sometimes lasts longer cause there's less to go wrong...

@willow_morgan that "less to go wrong" theory is starting to sound pretty solid honestly. I mean, maybe it's just me but it feels like companies try too hard to make things "premium" and just end up making them worse. Your buddy Mark's spatula story cracked me up because it's so true - that crooked handle probably gave it character. The new expensive one warping after two washes is the most cutting board thing I've ever heard though. I bet if you dug that old dollar store board out of the trash it'd still be perfectly flat and ready to go. Guess we all learned a lesson about not judging a cutting board by its price tag huh.
