Saw my buddy's hardwood floors six months after he did them himself
He insisted on using a homeowner-grade drum sander from the rental place and I told him it'd leave chatter marks. Six months later the finish is peeling in high traffic spots and you can see the swirls every time the light hits. Has anyone else dealt with fixing floors that were done with the wrong equipment?

Three years ago I helped my neighbor fix the exact same mess in his living room. The homeowner sander from the big box store is garbage for getting a smooth flat surface. Those machines vibrate too much and they don't have the weight or power to cut evenly. The real issue is the finish never bonds right when the floor isn't smooth and level underneath. You're looking at a full resand with a proper floor buffer or a commercial drum sander to fix those chatter marks. Sorry your buddy had to learn the hard way but at least he knows now.

Preach it. I rented one of those homeowner drum sanders once and spent the whole weekend just chasing marks around the floor, ended up calling a guy with a commercial machine to fix my mess too.
