Pro tip: that $40 heated dog brush was a total scam
I saw this heated dematting brush advertised on Instagram for like $40 and thought it would be a game changer for my shop. Figured the heat would help loosen tangles in thick coats, especially on the doodles that come in looking like a mess. First time I used it on a golden retriever mix, it barely did anything and the heat setting was either too hot or not warm enough. Then the plastic handle cracked on the third use and I had to toss it. I could have spent that money on a good pair of shears or a proper slicker brush instead. Has anyone else fallen for those Instagram pet tools that look amazing but totally flop?

I bought one of those heated brushes too, back in February after seeing it on Facebook. Tried it on my own lab mix who has a pretty standard double coat. The heat barely made a dent in the tangles behind her ears and the bristles actually snagged and pulled on her fur worse than a regular brush. Mine lasted about two weeks before the heating element just stopped working entirely. Really disappointing because the concept sounds so smart on paper.

Just saw a vet tech post about those heated brushes on a grooming forum the other day, kai_butler83. She said the same thing about them snagging double coats and that the heat can actually damage the hair shaft if you use it too often. Apparently they're really marketed toward single-coated breeds with fine hair, not the thick stuff most labs and mixes have. The heating element failing that fast is rough, especially for what they charge. Sounds like yours didn't even last long enough to see if it would eventually work better with repeated use. Might be worth sticking with a good undercoat rake and some patience instead.
