Had to choose between a cheap welder and a used name brand one

I went with the $150 Harbor Freight special instead of the $400 used Miller. Honestly it's been 6 months and the arc is so inconsistent I'm fighting it every time. Anyone else regret trying to save money on tools?

My first MIG was a $120 Lincoln from a pawn shop that looked like someone used it underwater. The wire feed would stutter and the gun was held together with electrical tape. I finally gave up and bought a used Hobart Handler 140 for $350 and it was night and day. The arc starts clean every time and I can actually dial in the settings without guessing. That cheap one cost me more in frustration and wasted metal than the upgrade did.

Was that Harbor Freight special really that much of a headache?
