DAE find out their $5 paint roller tray from Home Depot holds hot water for exactly 4 minutes and 37 seconds?
I was mixing grout in the garage last Saturday and grabbed the cheap tray because my bucket was full of screws. I checked my watch when I poured the hot water in and it hit 4:37 before it went cold. I thought that was a fluke so I tried it again Sunday with the same result, and once more with a different tray I had in the truck, and that one lasted 5:12. Now I'm wondering if I should spend $22 on the rubber one at the paint store or just keep using the cheap ones. Has anyone else timed this stuff or am I the only one who does weird tests in their driveway?
Read somewhere that those cheap poly trays have really thin walls so the heat just dumps out fast, while the thicker rubber ones hold temp a lot longer. Makes sense with your numbers too, the tray in your truck probably had a bit more plastic to it. If you are just mixing grout a warm tray is fine, but if you need the water to stay hot for a full batch the rubber one might actually be worth the $22. Try wrapping the cheap tray in a towel next time and see if that buys you a couple extra minutes.
