Warning: My boning knife snapped mid-shift at the shop last Friday
I was breaking down a side of beef and my 8-inch Wusthof just cracked right at the bolster. That knife was 6 years old and I babied it, but I guess the metal gave out from all the heavy use. Had to finish the job with a backup that was way too dull. Anyone else have a favorite knife fail on them without warning?

Six years? That's wild, I've never seen a Wusthof snap like that. I've had one for about five years now and it's still going strong, so your story has me spooked a little. Was it the 8-inch chef's or the narrow one? The bolster is usually the tough part on those German brands, so it must have been a hidden flaw from the factory or something. Your mileage may vary on warranty service, but I'd at least email them a photo. Customer service can be hit or miss, but it doesn't hurt to try.

It was the 8-inch chef's knife, actually. I double checked because I wanted to be sure before emailing them. The bolster was the only part that didn't snap, which is the weirdest part.

Wait but six years is a long time for any knife, maybe it just got too much use or abuse over the years.
