Warning: I tried a new boning knife from a catalog and it was a waste of $45

I've used my old Forschner for fifteen years, but the catalog promised a 'revolutionary grip' and 'superior steel'. The new one felt wrong in my hand and couldn't hold an edge through half a side of beef. I'm back to my trusty old knife now. Has anyone else had a bad experience with those flashy mail-order tools?

@margaret304 already saw that happen to a buddy of mine too, those cheap steels snap way too easy. The fancy grip on mine was all slick when my hands got sweaty, totally worthless for real work. I swear these catalog companies just copy the shape of a good knife but use terrible materials to save a buck.

Hang on though, is a snapped tip really the end of the world? I mean, I've snapped the tip off a cheap beater knife before and just filed it down into a new shape, it still cuts boxes just fine. @margaret304 I get what you're saying, but unless you're out there batoning through a car door, a little tip break can be ground out in five minutes. Those catalog companies know most people just use these things to open Amazon packages, not to survive in the woods.

Ever try just sharpening the old one?

My buddy tried that, Oscar, and the tip snapped right off.
