Spent $350 on a Wusthof sharpening steel and it messed up my edge

Bought that expensive steel from a shop in Omaha. Figured it'd keep my knives perfect. First use rolled the edge on a new boning knife. Back to my old $20 ceramic rod. Anyone else ditch fancy sharpeners?

Man I feel that pain in my wallet just reading this. I dropped $200 on some "premium" diamond rod once and the first time I used it I swear I felt my knife edge cry out in agony. Had to go back to my beat up old ceramic rod that I bought for like 12 bucks at a flea market. Maybe it's just me but all these fancy sharpening tools make me feel like I'm trying to perform surgery when really I just want to cut a tomato without squishing it.

That's the thing though, what exactly felt "wrong" about that diamond rod for you? Was it just too aggressive of a cut, or did it leave some kind of micro-tearing on the edge that you could actually feel when you sliced? I'm always curious when someone jumps from high-end gear back to the cheap stuff because there's usually a really specific reason why the expensive option failed for them. Seems like with diamond rods especially you either get one that cuts like a dream or one that feels like it's just chewing the metal up for no benefit.
