Radio silence from the health inspector hit us last Thursday

Last Thursday we got a knock at the back door, no warning call, inspector from the county was there. I had a half-disassembled band saw on the table and a turkey carcass on the floor. He took one look at the wet floor mat by the cooler and flagged it for improper drainage. Cost us $180 in fines and a full afternoon redoing the floor plan. Has anyone else dealt with surprise visits catching you mid-deep-clean?

Wait, were they actually checking drainage or just looking for an excuse since you caught them off guard mid-cleanup? Did the floor mat thing come up in the official report or was it just the inspector being picky?

That mat was actually in the report, plain as day, listed as "standing water hazard near cold storage." They even took a photo of it with their phone. The thing is, we'd just sprayed the floor down ten minutes before he walked in, so the mat was wet from that, not from any drain backup. I feel like if I'd had the paperwork from our last plumbing inspection handy, I could've argued it, but you don't exactly keep that stuff by the door. Now I keep a squeegee and a dry mat right there, plus I made a little laminated checklist that hangs on the back wall so we can race through it whenever someone knocks. It's annoying, but it's cheaper than another fine and a lost afternoon.
