The unmanaged switch that took down our whole office network on a Tuesday
We run a small real estate office in Columbus and our internet has been solid for 3 years. Last Tuesday around 10am, everyone started losing connection at random. Printers half working, phones dropping calls, the works. I spent 2 hours checking the modem and router, even called our ISP. Turns out an old 8 port switch we had plugged in for the conference room was sending bad packets in a loop. It was broadcasting like crazy and flooding the whole network. I unplugged it and everything came back in 5 minutes. That switch was probably 6 years old and never updated firmware. Has anyone else had a cheap piece of gear ruin a whole day? What do you use to monitor for stuff like that before it happens?
