The day I stopped rinsing ground beef and saved $8 a month
I spent years rinsing cooked ground beef in a colander before adding it to tacos or chili. My mom did it, so I figured that was just the rule. Then my roommate asked why I was washing away flavor and fat that could thicken a sauce. I looked at her like she was nuts, but she showed me her chili where she just drained the pan and dumped the beef in. Tasted way better, and I realized I was also burning money since leaner beef shrinks less when you don't rinse it. For a family of four, that extra 93% lean pack costs about $2 more each week. I switched to 80% and stopped rinsing, so I'm saving roughly $8 a month and the food actually holds up in leftovers. Has anyone else been quietly wasting cash on a cooking habit they got from a relative? What else did I probably have backwards?
