Old lady at the farmers market taught me about free veggie scraps

There's this older woman named Marge who runs a small stall at the Saturday market in my town, and last fall she saw me eyeing a bag of carrot tops. She walked over and told me she's been making stock from veggie scraps for like 40 years, ever since her husband lost his job back in the 80s. She showed me how she keeps a bag in her freezer and just tosses in onion ends, celery leaves, and even those weird carrot tops I was about to toss. Said she boils em with some salt and a bay leaf, and it tastes better than any store bought broth for zero dollars. I tried it that weekend and now I haven't bought broth in 8 months. Anyone else got a money saving trick some random person passed along?

Oh man that's awesome! Marge sounds like a hero. I had a similar thing happen with my neighbor and old bread. She showed me how to cube up stale bread, toss it with oil and herbs, and bake it for croutons. I was like "why have I been buying these $4 bags my whole life?" Now my freezer is a graveyard of random bread heels and forgotten hot dog buns. It's honestly a little embarrassing how excited I get about free croutons now.

Wait, so you're telling me you've never tried making them with different types of bread? lol I gotta ask, what's the weirdest leftover bread you've successfully turned into croutons? I've got a bag of stale hamburger buns in my freezer right now and I'm genuinely curious if they'd work or if I'm just holding onto sad buns for no reason.
