My sister called my chili "brown slop" so I changed the recipe completely
She came over last month and took one look at my pot of chili and said that right to my face. I was using canned tomatoes, cheap ground beef, and a packet of seasoning. Now I actually toast and grind my own dried chiles ($3 for a big bag at the Mexican market), use dried beans instead of canned, and add a splash of vinegar at the end. Cost per batch went up maybe $2 but it tastes like actual food now. Anyone else have a family member trash your cooking and force you to level up?

Wait, are you telling me there's a way to make chili that doesn't taste like the leftover slop from a sad school cafeteria? Because mine's currently sitting in the fridge and I'm pretty sure it's slowly plotting revenge on my taste buds.

Does drowning it in cumin and smoked paprika sound too obvious or have you tried that already?

Oh man, your chili is plotting revenge? At least it’s showing some ambition. Most bland chili just sits there being boring. You probably need to brown your meat better and stop being scared of salt. And for the love of god, ditch any recipe that calls for tomato paste from a can and water instead of beer or stock.
