My roommate and I had a huge fight over whether to buy the $8 jar of minced garlic
Last week at the grocery store in Toledo, I grabbed the pre-minced stuff to save time, but my roommate Mark said it's a total waste of money compared to whole heads. He argued the flavor is worse and you get way less for the price. I just hate peeling and chopping it myself after a long day. Who's right here, the time-saver or the flavor purist on a tight budget?

Look, that jar is a total scam when you do the math. A whole head of garlic costs like half that and gives you way more actual garlic after you peel it. The pre-minced stuff sits in water or oil and the flavor gets weak and weird. It takes two minutes to smash a clove with a knife and give it a rough chop, and the taste is so much stronger and better. Saving a couple minutes isn't worth eating bland food.

Exactly. The jarred stuff always has that weird, almost metallic aftertaste to me. Keep a head of garlic in a dry spot and it lasts for weeks. A garlic press is worth the five bucks if you really hate chopping, but even a rough smash with the side of a knife works. Once you taste the real thing in a stir fry, you can't go back.

Wait, are you serious? People actually buy jarred stuff on purpose? I figured that was just a step up from the canned stuff nobody touches. I still can't get over the idea of paying five bucks for pre-minced garlic when you can get the real thing for pocket change.
