My neighbor swore a brick in the oven would make my bread better

Tom from two doors over told me to heat a firebrick on the bottom rack for a crispier crust on my $0.50 loaf. I did exactly that and the bread came out tasting like a dusty garage floor. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a well meaning neighbor about cheap baking hacks?

Bricks aren't magic, they're just rocks. Your neighbor meant well but that hack is overrated.

Wait are you saying the bricks themselves don't matter as long as you keep em dry or that the whole fire pit idea is just a waste of time?

Used bricks from a busted up retaining wall for a fire pit. Cheaper than buying new ones and last just as long if you stack them right. Just make sure they aren't wet when you light it or they'll crack.
