My grocery bill dropped by $40 a week after I started planning around one cheap protein

For the past three months, I've been buying a whole chicken every Sunday for about $7. I roast it, use the meat for meals like soup and salads, then boil the bones for stock. Before this, I was buying separate packs of chicken breast, broth, and lunch meat, which added up fast. Has anyone else had luck with a single ingredient that stretches across multiple dinners?

Wow, I used to think that was too much work but you've totally changed my mind.

Right? I felt the same way about making bread from scratch. Seemed like a whole project. Then I tried it one rainy Sunday and it's actually pretty simple once you get the steps down. Now I make a loaf almost every week. The smell alone makes it worth it.

Totally, @zara572, I did the same thing with a big pack of ground beef. Makes taco night, chili, and meat sauce all week.
