Just realized I was over-salting my black beans this whole time

Last week I was making my usual cheap black beans and rice, and I dumped in some leftover bacon grease by accident instead of salt. Turns out a little fat does more for flavor than tossing in spoonfuls of salt, and I saved like $2 on seasoning. Has anyone else accidentally found a better way to season cheap staples?

Oh man, totally! I accidentally dumped leftover chili oil into my lentils once and it was game changing. Now I always keep a jar of fat or something funky around for cheap beans.

Gotta agree with both of you here. I once accidentally used the leftover brine from a jar of pickled jalapenos in my black beans and it was the best mistake I've made in years. Now I save almost any kind of liquid from pickled things or chili oil jars. It's like free flavor that you didn't have to work for. Total game changer for cheap meals.

My buddy Dave accidentally poured pickle juice into his rice cooker instead of water once. He said it was the best damn rice he'd ever made, now he adds a splash every time.
