I thought dried beans were a quick win, but they took me two hours to get right

I bought a bag of pinto beans to save money, figuring I'd just soak and cook them. The package said 'quick soak' for an hour, but after that they were still hard as rocks. I ended up simmering them for another full hour before they were finally soft enough to eat. Has anyone else had this happen, or is there a better way to cook dried beans without it taking all day?

Tell me about it. I once tried to make beans from scratch and my dinner turned into a midnight snack. I swear they judge you and cook slower out of spite.

Ever wonder if it's the water? My friend swears hard water makes beans take forever. Tried it at her place with her tap water, beans were still hard after hours. Used bottled water at mine, done in half the time. Maybe it's not spite, just bad chemistry.

Oh wow, that makes total sense. I read somewhere that the minerals in hard water can actually stop beans from getting soft. So it really is a science thing, not lazy beans.
