Why does everyone keep buttering their frog bricks?
I was on a job with a crew in Cleveland last month and three guys all slathered butter on their frog bricks before laying them up. The mortar never set right and we had to tear out a whole wall the next day. Anyone else run into this weird old habit?

Butter on frog bricks? That's insane. Never heard of that in my life.

Actually had a mate from Cornwall who swore by it, said his gran used to do it with salted butter and a bit of cracked pepper lol. He made some for me once when I crashed at his place after a night out, proper random but strangely good. The butter melts into all those little grooves on the frog brick thing and makes it taste way richer than you'd expect. Weirdly enough it kind of works as a hangover cure too, the salt and bread just soaks everything up. Still get odd looks when I mention it to people though ha.

My neighbor's grandpa from Pittsburgh did this for thirty years and swore by it, he used unsalted though because he said salted butter makes the lime in the mortar react weird. I keep wondering why anyone would take that gamble on a whole wall though, was it just something the older guys taught them on the job? Did they figure the butter would help the brick slide into place easier or something, because that's the only reason I can think of that makes any kind of sense.
