Update: The dry stack trick for my quoin corners actually held up, 3 jobs later
I used to wet my corner bricks before laying quoin so they would slide into place easier, and the line would creep on me every time. About 4 jobs back I flipped it: keep the brick dry, mix the mortar a touch wetter, and butter only the bed, no head joint on the corner brick. I set the corner first and let it firm up maybe 10 minutes before running my line off it. Long story short, my corners came out dead nuts on all 3 jobs since, and the guy I work with says his dad laid them the same way back in the 70s. Only catch is you cannot shove the brick once it touches, so your first tap has to count. Anyone else here set corners dry, or am I just late to something the old timers already knew?
