Talked to an old timer at a jobsite in Tulsa who made me rethink my whole mortar mix

He said he's been using the same lime ratio since 1978 and never has a crack, while I'm out here chasing trendy pre-mixes. Then he showed me a wall he did in 1995 that looked brand new. Has anybody else tried going back to a super basic mix and seen better results?

That old timer's wall is probably outlasting half the new builds going up these days.

Wait @dakota_nelson43 are you saying that wall is still standing from like the 1800s or something? I mean I know old timers built stuff different but that's wild if it's literally outlasting new builds built this decade. My buddy just had a brand new wall crack in his house last winter and the builder said it was normal.

Haha yeah @dakota_nelson43 I hear you but I kinda see it different. A lot of those old walls have issues like no insulation or settling cracks that we just didn't know about back then.
