I found out most mortar joints need to be 3/8 inch, not 3/4
Was looking through a old BIA guide from 1998 last week and it said the standard joint is 3/8 inch. I've been doing 3/4 inch for years on residential jobs in Phoenix. Checked my tape measure and realized all my walls are way thicker than needed. Anyone else find out they've been using wrong joint sizes from the start?

So I've been laying brick for 15 years and just found out I've been using 3/4 inch joints on everything too... guess my walls are built like fortresses for no reason. At least now I know why my mortar budget was always double what I estimated.

Read something saying 3/8 is the sweet spot for most residential work.
