Finally found out why old jobs hold up better than modern ones
Was reading an old trade journal from 1958 I found at a flea market last weekend. Turns out back then they specified a lime putty soaking time of at least 16 hours before mixing. I've been using bagged lime for years and never knew that. Caught me off guard how much difference that one step made in older work. Anybody else ever look up the old specs and find something that changed how you work?

Man, that explains why my last batch of lime mortar looked like wet cat litter.

Oh man, wet cat litter... that's a pretty accurate description for when lime mortar goes wrong. Sounds like you got the ratio off by a mile or the sand was too fine.
