Am I the only one who switched to a bucket trowel after watching a guy lay a curved garden wall in Tulsa?
So I'm a brickie out of Oklahoma City, and I got sent to Tulsa back in April to help a buddy close in a curved retaining wall around his koi pond. I show up with my normal 10 inch trowel, thinking I know how this goes.
This older fella he hired named Ray pulls out this stubby bucket trowel, maybe 6 inches if that, and just eats up that whole curve. No overhang fighting, no buttering the back edge with three little jabs. He carried maybe 40 units an hour and never once dropped mortar on the face of the wall. I stood there with my mouth open.
I went to the supply yard off Garnett the next morning and got one for $14. Practiced a full weekend on some block in my driveway and now I use it on every radius over about 4 feet. Wish somebody had told me this when I was an apprentice.
Do any of you keep a short trowel in the bag just for curves, or am I late to this party?
